From the Editor: Welcome to The Slingshot.

5 May 2009

J. Moriarty Clench, Esq., Editor of The Slingshot.

It is with profound satisfaction and a gratifying sense of triumph over the machinations of evil men that I take up my pen as Editor of this first issue of the New Series of The Slingshot, the Great British Magazine for Young Chaps. Since its first appearance in a not-distant year, The Slingshot has established itself as the Magazine of Choice for all discerning and enterprising Young Chaps in Great Britain, the Empire, and Beyond. With this New Series of the Magazine, untrammelled by the burdens of financial liabilities incurred in the past, that reputation will be upheld; as before, within the pages of The Slingshot readers will thrill to stories of Adventure, learn fascinating Facts about the world around them, grapple with mind-expanding Puzzles and Games, and absorb sound Advice and bold moral Exhortation. Be sure you have your copy of The Slingshot every month — fold it into your Knapsack — pack it in your Sea-Chest — thrust it playfully down a pal’s Shorts.

Now is not the time to pursue the hard-working Staff and Publishers of this Magazine with past grievances and demands for money. Charges of questionable business practices and financial mismanagement must be swept aside and forgotten, ongoing legal proceedings must be suspended, so that all may join in hailing The Slingshot as, once more, a Fine Influence on Our Nation’s Youth.

The Slingshot will continue to uphold the values of Patriotism, Hard Work, Clean Living and Fair Play that ever flourish beneath the British Flag and in the breast of every Young Briton. The world must own that the propagation of these values is too important a matter to be put at risk for the sake of a few unpaid bills.

    Dear Sir,

It is with a sense of tremendous Exhilaration that I re-discover your outstanding Compendium. I used to be a devoted reader of the First Series of “The Slingshot” –that is, before I embarked on my second trip of Wanderings in West Africa, during which I discovered 12 new rivers and 13,000 new species of frog. However, upon my return from Africa, it was with great sadness that I discovered that your Worthy Compendium had vanished. No doubt the forces of evil thought they were winning the Battle against the Forces of Civilization, admirably represented by The Slingshot. But I now see that you are back on the front lines! Oh, the joy!

Having said the above, I was wondering whether you were planning to re-publish your previous editions. During my travels to Africa, I missed #s 9 and 10.

    Yours, Sincerely,

Maj. Gen. Sassafras C. Babcoot, GCB, LVO

    Dear Maj. Gen. Babcoot,

My grateful thanks to you for your Kind Words, and please accept my sincere apologies for the Tardiness with which this response has been vouchsafed to you, a consequence of this being the Holiday Season. It is a matter of Great Gratification to all of us at “The Slingshot” that the magazine has been sorely missed during its recent absence, and is now welcomed back with such Unalloyed Delight by persons of Sensibility and Discrimination such as your good self.

This matter of Bloggery is new to us, there are competing calls upon our time, and we are afflicted by Fecklessness; for all these reasons we cannot at present promise the expeditious provision of copious content. However, the intention is to present all back numbers of “The Slingshot” here in due course, and to publish New Material as soon as is likely.

Assuring you of our Humble & Heartfelt etc. etc..

    J. Moriarty Clench, Esq., Editor.
